Tarpon Fishing on Rio Frio, Rio San Juan, Nicaragua Lake, and Solentiname

Welcome to La Esquina Del Lago! We're excited to share with you information about the beautiful Rio San Juan River, which stretches for 120 miles and originates from Nicaragua Lake. Our main lodge is located within the stunning Los Guatuzos National Park, precisely where Rio San Juan starts at the corner with Rio Frio and Nicaragua Lake. This breathtaking river flows from the lake towards the Caribbean, and it's the only means of transportation between the Great Nicaragua Lake (Cocibolca) and the Caribbean Sea. We're thrilled to provide you with more details about this remarkable river and how it connects these two stunning bodies of water.

Speaking of Nicaragua Lake, did you know that it's the largest lake in Central America, spanning over 100 miles by 70 miles? It's renowned for its freshwater fish, including the quiet giant Tarpon, Sawfish, Shark, and Snook. And let's not forget about the Rainbow Bass, Mojarra, Gar, and Machaca that call the lake their home.

Over the years, our lodge has been visited by renowned investigators such as Commandant Jacques Yves Cousteau, who came to study El Banco de Arena precisely at the corner of the lake with Rio Frio and Rio San Juan. Thomas Thornson from the University of Nebraska also studied here for many years, writing the book "The Fish of Nicaragua Lake." We've even hosted the Tarpon investigation team of Miami University in 2010 and were featured in the Nat Geo Monster Fish Show in March 2014.

We're incredibly fortunate to observe a tremendous quantity of Tarpon weighing between 60lb to 250lb+ going up and down the river throughout the year. There's no specific month for the best time to visit as we operate all year round. Our usual catches range from 90lbs to 200lbs, with some Tarpon growing even bigger. Some migrate, while others stick around for a while before returning to the sea. The Tarpon become very large here because feeding is easy for them, and due to tannin in the water, these giant fish have a unique color - black on the back and dark green/golden on the side.

We're proud to say that we've even caught fish estimated to be over 300lbs - it's a truly unbelievable experience that you won't want to miss! So come and join us at our lodge to discover the magic of Rio San Juan River and Nicaragua Lake.
